On Friday 21st October A-Band and some of the band alumni were invited to the Steve Prescott Bridge in St Helens to play in a breast cancer awareness event organised by Julie, one of our committee members and band parents. The event was held in memory of some friends of the band who recently very sadly lost their battles with cancer and in solidarity with those who are both fighting the illness now and those who have overcome it. The Steve Prescott Bridge was lit up pink and pink balloons were released into the sky whilst the band played a beautiful yet emotional rendition of Abide With Me, a classic hymn tune. In addition to this hymn, the band played our signature piece ‘The Saints’ – fitting in perfectly with the community feeling of the event and the setting next to Langtree Park (the St Helens rugby ground).
All of us in the band are very proud to have been able to play at such a special event in memory and honour of those who have bravely fought such a horrible illness. We are proud to be from a town with such a special community feeling and events such as this sum up what SHYBB is all about. We would like to extend our thanks to all those who played, the parents who came to support the band and bring the band members, everyone who came to watch us and of course to Julie who invited us to this incredibly special event.
Video recordings of the band playing ‘The Saints’ can be found on our Facebook page (St. Helens Youth Brass Band) and our instagram page (@sthybb).
