This year at our annual Spring Concert, we were delighted to invited internationally renowned Euphonium player David Thornton to help inspire players from both our bands with some stunningly intricate playing. As well as our photo’s in the gallery, William, Youth Bands soprano cornet player, captures the whole event perfectly below:

… The SHYBB Spring Concert was held at Rainford High on 28th March. We were all looking forward to this concert not least because David Thornton was featuring as our guest soloist for the evening. We had practised with David twice and all knew what a fantastic player he was.

The Junior Band began the evening and got us off to a great start by playing pieces; Black Mamba Samba and Galop to name a few. There were some great soloists which show the future of the band is bright.

The Youth Band opened their programme with the uplifting Midwest March, this was followed by the fantastic David Thornton playing ‘Neath the Dublin Skies, accompanied by the band. David really showcased his talent with this piece, showing why he is a champion soloist currently playing euphonium for Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band. We were treated to further pieces from David during the evening, including Hummingbrrd; an unusual piece with a backing track created entirely from one persons vocals.  This piece truly mesmerised the audience and the band.

Below, is one of the pieces he played…

The band played some great music during the evening and we were pleased to be complemented by David for our playing and talent. The traditional hymn Abide With Me was fittingly dedicated by Gareth to all who perished in the Alps plane crash that week.

The evening was a mix of traditional and modern music which culminated in our signature piece The Saints, which as always was played with pride and passion, a fitting end to a fantastic evening of music and talent.
