Musical Directors Report

In the few months since I took musical leadership of SHYBB I feel that we have already made great progress. September was a time of great change for the band: the reintroduction of seating auditions, re-strengthening of the ‘B band’ and a greater emphasis on personal practice – many changes have taken place in a short space of time as we look towards the future. And I’m proud of the way all the players have risen to the challenge and the change.
I’m really pleased to report that lesson uptake is on the increase – some members are even choosing to take lessons with me through the music service advanced tuition facility! We also have several new members, in both the A and B band, and I hope this recruitment drive will continue. I’m urging band members to champion the band and the work we do wherever possible, and continue asking players to come along. I also really welcome the assistance of volunteers such as Sarah Lofthouse on a Saturday morning, to support my rehearsals.
We have created new band leaflets and branded letter-headed paper, and are already developing some great ideas in terms of press and social media expansion.
There’s also been great progress in terms of band discipline and the sense of ownership of our organisation and possessions. We are really starting to take great pride in who we are and what we do. That is a team effort, which I really applaud.
On the musical side of things, I have commissioned a new work for the band by a young dynamic composer and have purchased new music with the intention of beginning contesting again. Both bands continue to improve the caliber of their playing and the musical standards that they can achieve, and I’ve absolute faith that this will continue as we recruit more new members.
I have enjoyed my first term as MD of such a warm and welcoming Youth Band. There is a wonderful sense of energy and optimism every Saturday morning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the committee and the band members for their ongoing support and hard work – I feel extremely optimistic about the future of this young, vibrant group of talented musicians.
