The Rainford Band and St Helens Youth Brass Band held a joint concert on 13th June 2015 in the magnificent venue of the St Helens Town Hall featuring guest soloist and former St Helens Youth Brass Band member, the incredible Paul Duffy.
The Youth Band opened the concert with a wonderful selection of pieces including the uplifting Midwest March, a trombone feature Seventy Six Trombones and Sinatra’s New York New York- which is always popular with the audience and the band and which did not disappoint on the night.
Then we welcomed the incredibly talented Paul Duffy to the stage and he entertained and mesmerised us by playing Stardust, a slow trombone solo accompanied by the Youth Band. We were treated to further pieces from Paul during the evening including Hallelujah I Love Her So showcasing his many talents in which he played the trumpet and piano simultaneously. Later on, Paul stunned both the audience and the band by using a machine which recorded and repeated sounds that were then built on in order to create an amazing piece of music. It involved Paul beatboxing, singing and playing the trumpet and piano – a musical spectacular.
Following this, Rainford Band took to the stage playing a selection of great music including The Hunting Scene, Gaelforce and Gabriel’s Oboe before being joined by the Youth Band for some massed band pieces including the beautiful hymn Amazing Grace and the jazz styled Birdland before our finale Pines of Rome played with pride and passion by both bands resulting in a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience and providing a fitting end to a fantastic evening of music and talent.
